This magic ring photo tutorial details the steps to crochet a magic ring. Magic rings are also called adjustable rings, magic circles, magic adjustable rings and adjustable loops. The ‘magic’ part is that you can tighten the ring to minimize the gap in the middle of the ring. This technique is commonly used in amigurumi and hats.
Step 1
Loop yarn from front to back around pointer and middle fingers one time. Notice the cross or overlapping yarn on my pointer finger.
Step 2
From right to left, place crochet hook under right yarn (this is the tail draping down the front of your hand) and grab the left yarn (this is the yarn draping down the back of your hand to your yarn ball) with your crochet hook.
Step 3
Pull the left yarn underneath the right yarn with your crochet hook (photo 3-A). Twist your crochet hook towards you as if you are about to chain (photo 3-B).
Step 4
Grab a hold of the loop on your hook and pull your fingers out of the loop.
Step 5
Adjust your hold and grab the yarn running to your yarn ball (photo 5-A). Grasp the bottom of the ring with your thumb and middle finger (photo 5-B). Chain 1 (photo 5-C).
Step 6
Insert hook through the middle of the ring and grab the yarn running to your yarn ball (photo 6-A). Pull up a loop (photo 6-B). Grab the yarn running to your yarn ball (photo 6-C) and complete the single crochet (photo 6-D). That is one single crochet in your magic ring.
Step 7
Repeat step 6 until you have 6 single crochets in your magic ring.
Step 8
Gently hold the loop on your hook and the last single crochet with your thumb and index finger (photo 8-A). Grab the tail and gently pull to tighten the ring (photo 8-B).
Step 9
With a tightened ring (photo 9-A), slip stitch in first single crochet (photo 9-B and photo 9-C).
Step 10
Congratulate yourself on your magic ring. Patterns will specify how many single crochets, double crochets, etc. to put into your magic ring. If your pattern states to double crochet into a magic ring then chain 3 in step 5.
I hope you enjoyed this photo tutorial on how to crochet a magic ring. Take care.
